Baliscate Chapel Update |
|
We have continued with fund raising throughout 2011,Mull
and Iona Community Trust- Mess and the Eagle
Hide gave us £250 and £380 which helped towards the
printing of reports and leaflets with a trail taking you
to standing stones, corn drying kiln and the chapel
site. The Forestry commission have erected posts with
our cross logo designed by Andrew Reid and created by
Brian Swinbanks at KFT
We spent the Autumn, working out a brief and filling
application forms and in November we applied to Heritage
Lottery and
Argyll and the Islands
LEADER Programme
for the funding to take the excavation further.
Jean and I have been researching St Cattan trying to
find a connection between Baliscate and Coille Creag
A’Chait. We have now lots of material to add to the
Baliscate archive.
The site was scheduled by Historic Scotland Baliscate
Chapel is now a scheduled monument.
Great news came on the 15th December when we
heard we has been awarded the funding from Heritage
Lottery and Argyll
and the Islands
LEADER Programme
to carry out further excavation in the summer of 2012

This year the 2300 club celebrate the
40th running of the “Best Rally in The World” the
Tunnocks Tour of Mull rally. Crews face a trip round the
town of Tobermory for the opening 2 stages of this years
event, this stage last ran for the Millennium event in
1999.
|
This year, as in previous years,
we will be doing 'Goodie bags'
for all the Mull Schools,
however, in a bit of a 'Willie
Wonka, Golden Ticket' moment, we
are including special GOLD
stickers in FOUR of the bags....
All the bags will have a
sticker in them from RallyTech
(one of the 'friends' of the
2300 Club), but most of these
stickers will be Black. Just
four of the stickers will be
GOLD though and if you are the
lucky receipient of one of these
gold stickers, then RallyTech
have a special suprise in store
for you. You will be met at the
Tobermory car park, near to the
distillery and then John
Swinscoe (Seeded 21st for 2009)
will give you a ride to remember
in his Mitsubishi Evo 9 across
the Mishnish Lochs road to
Dervaig. |

May 2009 - Channel 4's Time Team visit
Baliscate |
|
Island
Holiday Cottage's Hylda Marsh and friend Bev Langhorn
made a remarkable discovery through their work with
'Scotland's Rural Past' leading to a visit in May from
Channel 4's Time Team.
Scotland's
Rural Past is a volunteer led survey by the Royal
Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of
Scotland (RCAHMS).
What they
found turned out to be one of the most important finds
ever featured on the programme, which has been running
for 17 years.
We can't
disclose what was found - you'll have to watch the
programme which is due for broadcast in March 2010.
